Don't believe everything you think!

I’ve had a lot going on in my life in the past few weeks and there have been times when it’s all felt too much.
It really hasn’t been easy.
Right now things are settling down… as things invariably have a habit of doing… but it’s made me think…
Isn’t this the regular pattern of life?
We are faced with tricky situations or challenges.
BUT we make things so much worse by mulling over them and going straight to “worst case scenario”.
Our minds want us to be prepared for the worst case-scenario situation and I believe it’s because we think :
- if we’re prepared
- then we wont be blind-sided and
- we’ll be better equipped to deal with things.

But how often do things end up in a worst-case scenario situation???
Not very often!
It’s the thoughts that we think about anything which make us feel good or bad.
It’s not the events themselves which make us feel the way we end up feeling.
Really let that percolate for a second!
Now, although I know this stuff and I use it in my work I can still get swept up in responding to my thoughts.
But I am getting better at creating space in my mind so that I don’t end up believing everything I think.
And this gives me a great break, perspective and some peace in the midst of the inevitable turmoil which life will throw my way.
It opens up the possibility of me exploring what the potential opportunities might be in the challenge at hand.
After all, as Mark Twain said..
“I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”
