Why am I not making changes when I know I should?

Might it be possible that you are just keeping the excuses around to avoid having to make a commitment to making and implementing a change?

If it feels over-whelming are you perhaps trying to bite off more than you can chew?

We’ve all heard the expression that a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. So instead of thinking of how long the journey is how about thinking instead of what small thing you can do today to bring you one step closer to your goal.

But do you REALLY want to do that 1000 mile journey or would you rather do something different?

So often we make excuses as to why we can’t have something or do something and we answer “Yes but…..” very convincingly to anyone who might suggest otherwise.

But in my experience if we REALLY want something then we will find a way to make it happen. So how about asking yourself the question “Do I really want this? And if the answer is yes then ask the next question “Why do I really want this?”

And keep asking Why? Why? Why? until you get to the real reason it is important to you.

When we know the reason why we want to do something there is nothing more powerful as a motivator and we WILL find out “how”. When we know why we want to get somewhere we will find a way to get there.

Could it be that we may not REALLY WANT it? If that’s the case then let’s be honest with ourselves and admit that it’s not really that important to us.

But if we do really want to get to that destination sometimes there is a powerful force at work which can get in the way of us taking that first step and so we make the excuses as to why we can’t have it and this gets us off the hook of really trying.

It works away in the back-ground and it dresses itself up as all sorts of things sometimes as perfectionism, sometimes as judgement, sometimes as jealousy or shortage of time.

However underneath all of these disguises can be the very real emotion FEAR.

What if I’m not good enough? What if I fail? What if I’m not accepted?

Fear is the subject of a separate blog but please know this - recognising the existence of fear is the very first step in disarming it of its crippling power.

And this is even more important to know :

IT CAN BE DISARMED of its crippling power and then the questions become much more exciting…

What if I am good enough? What if I succeed? What if they love me?

Who wouldn’t want that???
