Why do I feel empty? Like something is missing...

Do you feel like there is something missing despite on the face of it seeming to have it all? Or at least on the face of it, things look good?
You know in your rational mind that you “should” be happy but still there seems to be something a little off-kilter.
And yes of course you experience joy or pleasure some of the time… but when left to your own devices, when you are away from distractions… there’s a gnawing feeling at the centre of your core nagging away and it feels like a void which wants to be filled.
You might try distractions, exercise, social media, alcohol, food, shopping, gambling, porn, affairs, travel, sex, novelty and the rest to get a buzz and escape from it. And yes this works for a while….
But then the feeling always comes back….
Over time the things that used to give you pleasure don’t seem to quite hit the spot so you need more and more as it’s like you’ve become desensitized in some way. And like an addict needing a stronger dose you keep at it thinking that the next one will do the job.
You’re in the realm of Hungry Ghosts! (Gabor Mate wrote a great book about this)

We humans live a Dual Life.
- Our outside world - how we present ourselves in the world
- Our inner world – how we feel on the inside. Lots of beliefs, fears, rules, judgement, pain, memories. Often deeply lodged in our sub-conscious below our awareness.
For us to feel whole and complete the two need to be aligned.
The problem is that we are searching on the outside for the solutions to the feelings we have on the inside. We are looking in the wrong place.
We are effectively asking an electrician to plumb our house. They’re simply not qualified.
External distractions are never going to fill that void.
Getting to know yourself better and working through this with someone who can guide you is the only way forward.
Please reach out if any of this resonates and I would be delighted to have a complimentary chat.
